Distribution and Marketing Methods

Jack Johnson is a singer/ songwriter who is relatively popular in his particular genre. This means that there is lots of different potential platforms for fans of his music to buy it whether it be downoaded of Itunes or physically bought from HMV.
A form that’s popularity is decreasing now, due to downloads on the internet is the production of a physical CD. The fact that stores such as HMV, Zavvi and supermarket stores such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s, Morrison’s and Asda sell Jack Johnson's album is clear evidence of his popularity, as the stores know that the album will be sold.

Jack Johnson is a popular
artist due to the number of records that
he sells. This means that his album "Inbetween Dreams" is a big hit on leading online music shops like Amazon.

I believe that due to our album being a simlar genre to Jack Johnson, we should distribute it on online retailers like Amazon.

HMV is simlar to Amazon and therefore Jack Johnson's album "Inbetween Dreams" is distributed on their website aswell. Also, you can buy the album in store. Thsi means that the album is distributed on the High Street aswell as online.

I believe that we should look to distribute through a leading store like HMV because it would be very accesible to fans of the artist.

Just like HMV, Zavvi has an online store and a high street store. With shops like these, albums are similar prices so its mostly about customer loyalty. This means that Inbetween Dreams is sold at both stores to therefore increase sales.

I believe that our album should be sold at Zavvi in order to increase sales. Especially as it is a debut album that will need as much marketing as possible if it is to cover the production costs and make a profit on it.

Itunes is also an online store. Itunes have a massive advantage in the way that it is very accessible due to the song or album you download goes straight into your Itunes library. The Ipod is the biggest selling MP3 player and because of this, Itunes is very popular and the majority of Ipod owners will obtain all there music from Itunes.

I believe that our album should be sold on Itunes because purchasing music on Itunes is the most popular way to obtain new music. Also is distributed on Itunes, we will not need to make as many digipacks and therefore decreasing production costs and maximising profits.

Directors pitch

Director Pitch/ Treatment For Music Video.
Name Of Artist: Jonny Jackson
Title of Track: "little did she know"
Genre: Singer-songwriter
Target Audience: variety of ages (mainly teenagers) chilled theme, acoustic fans.

Outline of Ideas: What will happen?
Our video will be a hybrid video so there will be a variety of different shots of a young male that is shown singing to establish the performance part of the music video. He is singing about a girl called "Taylor" (Which is the original name of the song done by jack Johnson) The narrative part of the video is then shows a love story, at first he seems to appear far away from her, however he becomes closer and closer and appears in the same shot as her. The story unravels and it becomes clear this girl isn't happy, it is left to the audience to make up their own minds about the ending of the story. however it does suggest that our artist and also protagonist is no longer interested in our girl "taylor". The aim of the song is to get the audience connected and feel the emotion he is expressing through the video.

Locations
There was much discussion between our group of where we would film this footage and we looked at a range of places we could use. we used our knowledge of the local area to decide perfect locations to film.
We have decided on a combination of indoors and outdoors would be best, as the "natural" setting is produced in all the other music video's of the same genre.  This gives us more variety of shots and scenery and doesn’t mean our whole video will be based in the same location. we chose to use "The Shief" pub, as we had access to it and we originally liked the idea of "Taylor" being stood up in a restaurant, so it seemed perfect. This combined with the local area of "West Haddon" was perfect for the location we desired.

What Resources are needed?
For the filming itself, we just need a camera, tripod, actors and a setting for the video. We used various sources to gain permission to film in a local pub "The Sheif".

Justifications of Ideas in Relation to Genre and Artist
Through our research, we managed to discover that many music videos in this genre base their videos mainly on the artist, who also seems to be the actor in the video. We as a group also liked the idea of a Hybrid video as the majority of music videos in this genre are in this format. Using these two factors we have hopefully made a video that is a believable folk music video while also to an extent challenging them ideas and making the best music video we possibly could.

Artist Research: Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson was born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawai. Johnson released a four track demo that caught the attention of Ben Harper's producer, J. P. Plunier, who worked with Johnson on his debut album Brushfire Fairytales in early 2001 and this would prove to be Jack's big break as it made him receive a record deal.
Johnson went back into the studio with Adam Topol and Merlo Podlewski, who played on Brushfire Fairytales, and Mario Caldato Jr on production duties, to record his second full-length album On and On. It was the first album to be recorded at Johnson's Mango Tree Studio in Johnson's home town of North Shore, Oahu, and the first to be released through The Moonshine Conspiracy Records. On and On was released on May 6, 2003.

In October 2004, Johnson returned to the Mango Tree Studio with Topol and Podlewski along with Zach Gil playing accordion, melodica and piano, to record his follow-up to 2003's On and OnIn Between Dreams was released on March 1, 2005.
Johnson enlisted J.P. Plunier to produce his fourth full-length studio album, Sleep Through the Static. It was recorded using 100% solar energy at the Solar-Powered Plastic Plant studio in Los Angeles. The album featured Gill, Podlewski and Topol. Sleep Through the Staticwas released on February 1, 2008 and was followed by a world tour.

On 1 February 2010, Johnson's official website announced that his fifth studio album, To the Sea, was in the recording process at the Mango Tree Studio, with a planned worldwide release during the first week of June 2010.
